ABOUT PILATESPilates is a system of movements and exercises developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's. A German gymnast, Pilates created this innovative method to realign and balance your body. Pilates builds long, lean bodies, adding strength without adding bulk. Joseph Pilates believed in raising deep breathing to oxygenate the body's cells and rid it of fatigue. "Even if you follow no other instructions," he said, "learn to breathe correctly." Pilates exercises lead to a firmer, stronger core, better carriage, and a trimmer body. Used by doctors, physical therapists, dancers and athletes, Pilates is a proven exercise technique that is safe and effective for all ages and fitness levels. A powerful healing and educational tool, Pilates is a full body conditioning program comprising a series of approximately 500 designated movements performed on a mat or specific apparatus. The rhythmic Pilates exercises improve posture, tone and grace. Pilates elongates and tones your muscles, develops your abdominal, low back and buttocks strength, and promotes a strong body core. At the same time, the exercises help to unify the mind and body, and can produce a meditative feeling. The goal of Pilates is to slim and strengthen muscles, and to help you develop your inner strength through a fusion of body and mind. Pilates training has been used extensively by professional and Olympic athletes, professional dancers and celebrities to help improve performance and create strong bodies. "In 10 sessions, you'll feel the difference," said Joseph Pilates. "In 20 sessions, you'll see the difference. And in 30 you'll have a whole new body." Pilates for RehabilitationThe Pilates Method is a system of therapeutic exercise developed by Joseph H. Pilates over a span of 60 years. Utilizing the specialized equipment he designed, the method works by strengthening individual muscles as well as balancing muscular force at the joint level. It stimulates circulation through facilitating muscular flexibility, joint range of motion and proper musculoskeletal alignment. In addition, it promotes new neuromuscular patters, heightened body awareness, and more precise coordination. All these things combine to help prevent further re-injury and reduce (and in some cases alleviate altogether) chronic pain. Today Pilates is offered in hospitals, medical offices, universities, health clubs and independent studios around the world. As both a rehabilitation and wellness program, Pilates is a wonderful complement to physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy and many other therapeutic or physical fitness systems. Currently, Simpatico Pilates works in association with various Physical Therapy centers and health care practitioners in the Santa Barbara area. They have found Pilates and Gyrotonic® to be an effective, invigorating program and we had had great success with the patients they have referred to us. Simpatico offers specialized training, such as pre- and post-pregnancy Pilates and Pilates for Golf. Simpatico can accept some forms of insurance.
